So talking about the "Rarest car you've ever seen" post on the FP, I remembered how I had a magical encounter with an Enzo. I thought I would share.
So one day I casually went to my local mall to have lunch with the gf, from across the parking lot I see this black car that looks like a jet fighter. I stopped, stunned for a moment. It was an Enzo. This was back in 2008, so the Enzo was still one of the biggest cars to be reckoned with. I ran to get a disposable camera (this was before potato-cameras) and took a bunch of pics.
Eventually this guy in New Balances and sweatpants walks towards it. I ask him "Is this yours?". His simple reply: "well let's see if this key works". Then like a boss he flips open the door. He then asked me if I wanted to sit in it. I was speechless, so luckily my gf said "yes, yes he would".
I sat in it for a bit and marveled at how there was nothing inside. Everything was carbon fiber. He then said that, sorry, there wasn't room for him to take me for a ride (he had a tiny bag that had to take the passenger's seat), but I didn't care, I was just happy to be near it.
He then started it up and rumbled away, it sounded like the devil was driving away. Well since there are only what, 300 enzo's made, with at least 10 destroyed now, I would say it was the rarest thing I have seen, especially since it was factory black.
Edit: I forgot to mention how the owner owned a hair salon there, he also did something with Wall Street from his (probable) cabin-mansion just up in the mountains.
Yes, that is my goofy-ass face of pure delight.

Awesome. Cool enthusiasts like that sure know how to make someone's day.
Oh, and there were 349 Enzos built. I knew that off the top of my head. /MaybeThatsWhyI'mSingleAgain

Seriously, like a boss.

Don't worry, a girl will appreciate them. My gf just rolls her eyes whenever I start going into the nitty gritty about car details. She had a hard time when a huge car buff and I went to the Denver Auto Show and she tagged along. She didn't understand how we could care about tiny details like lettering inside a headlight.
That's Jalops for ya.

That guy was pretty cool

Did you dragon it? because if you are going to dragon a car, an Enzo should be at the top of the list.

The lady-friend probably would not have approved at the time.
Otherwise yes I would have, even with the children running around it.

I was mostly joking. My ex has legit jalop cred. Only drove manuals, calls automatic sports cars neutered, and dreams of owning a '69 Firebird. The breakup was because she has...issues to sort out.

Great story and awesome owner.
As far as production numbers, well the Enzo you are sitting in is painted "Nero" and, if I remember correctly, there were only 35 of those made. Also, the one you sat in is actually quite rare, as most Enzos only had black or red interiors.
As for production numbers, there were officially 400 Enzos produced (399 originally planned but a 400th one was made for tsunami relief) (only 70 came to the US) and 8 prototypes if you want to count those.

Enzo's are absolutely breathtaking to see in the flesh. I saw 2 in one day at a Ferrari event when they were brand new (one yellow, one red) and it was a sight to see. Gorgeous cars.

I read the other day that Ferrari made more than 499 16Ms. Dunno if it's true or not... I read they cheated and made a few extra for profit.

I've heard similar things as well (someone once told me that Ferrari usually sells 10% more than they say they will). However, I can't really comment because I don't know enough about Ferrari as a brand. Most of the things I do know, like the figures I listed above, I learned from my friends, who know much more about the brand than I do.

I guess as long as they don't sell WAY more than promised it's not a big deal since at least 10% of the cars are destroyed by fire or spinning into a tree within the first 5 years ;)

Haha. I guess it all evens out in time.

Agreed. On the screen they look pretty good, but in real life it was jaw-dropping.
